Melissa Cullen

Daycare Provider

Melissa Cullen’s roots are deeply embedded in a rich cultural heritage. Her father, of Sicilian and Italian descent, and her mother, with Portuguese and Cape Verdean roots, gave her a diverse foundation. As the middle child of eight siblings—five sisters and three brothers—she was always surrounded by the lively dynamics of a large family. She spent her early years in Brighton, Massachusetts, before moving to Newton, MA, where her family found their dream home. The new neighborhood, filled with other large families, created a tight-knit community that felt like one extended family.

Family Influence and Early Challenges

Melissa’s brothers, Richard and Demetrius, significantly influenced her childhood. Demetrius, the eldest, became a basketball star in the early 1980s, which inspired her to get involved in track and gymnastics. Her love for these sports led her to become co-captain of the cheerleading team for two years. Richard, the youngest of her siblings, also found success in professional athletics, gracing the covers of several magazines. However, she faced challenges growing up as the only Black family in her neighborhood. She encountered racial tensions, particularly during an unexpected racial conflict in Newton South, which created an uncomfortable environment for her.

Exploring New Paths

Melissa’s career journey is as diverse as her background. She began her professional life in the camp industry, driven by a passion for working with children. Having spent her childhood attending camp with her siblings, she became a Camp Director after starting as a Counselor in Training (CIT). This role allowed her to combine her love for children with her leadership abilities. Alongside her work at camp, she studied interior design at Newbury College and Suffolk University in Boston, broadening her skill set.

Her professional endeavors expanded into multiple fields. Melissa Cullen was a wedding planner and designer who helped couples create unforgettable memories. She also opened and operated a flower shop, Floral Expressions, and ran two daycare centers. Additionally, she delved into home interior design and real estate, gaining valuable business experience. These varied roles allowed her to develop skills that would later serve her mission of giving back to her community.

Shorelines of Hope: Serving the Homeless

The founding of Shorelines of Hope, a nonprofit organization focused on helping people experiencing homelessness, marked a significant turning point in Melissa’s career. The nonprofit will offer crucial services to needy people, including a soup kitchen, showers, and four meals daily. Volunteers will operate the facility by providing food, dignity, and care to individuals often overlooked by society. Melissa is working to open the facility in Rhode Island, where she lives, to ease the burden of homelessness in her community.

With 12 years of experience as a volunteer counselor, she has developed a deep understanding of the fulfillment of giving her time to others. She is committed to ensuring that Shorelines of Hope is a place of refuge and support for those experiencing homelessness.

Future Vision: Shore Adventure Centers

Looking to the future, Melissa is planning to open Shore Adventure Centers in 2027. These all-season camps will cater to children and adults with special needs, people with paraplegia, and transgender individuals, providing them with inclusive and accessible recreational activities. The camps will feature ADA-compliant facilities, trained staff, and amenities like an indoor and outdoor pool with a lift. The goal is to offer these camps free of charge to children from inner-city environments, allowing them to experience something truly special.

Melissa is seeking 25 to 30 acres of land in Foster, Rhode Island, an area known for its natural beauty and tranquil setting. The rural landscape, with rolling hills and forests, offers the ideal location for a camp that will provide children with lasting memories and an opportunity to build confidence and self-esteem.

Partnerships for Impact

To ensure the success of her nonprofit and camp initiatives, she is forming partnerships with organizations that share her vision. She plans to collaborate with the ASPCA for dog therapy, the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University for internships, and local food companies to provide meals for her programs. Melissa also works with sports organizations, including the Special Olympics, to support children from all backgrounds.

A Lifelong Commitment to Giving Back

Melissa’s work reflects her unwavering commitment to giving back to the community. After achieving personal and professional success, she has focused on serving others. She is determined to create lasting change and provide opportunities for those who need it most, whether through Shorelines of Hope or the Shore Adventure Centers.

Melissa Cullen holds patents for two inventions—the Chairliner and Nite Cap Liquor Top—reflecting her innovative business approach. She continues to work toward her vision of a world where everyone can access opportunity, support, and joy.
